Stone Age Soundtracks: The Acoustic Archaeology of Ancient Sites
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (01 March, 2002)
Author: Paul Devereux
Average review score:

The stones are singing
This book reveals an exciting new field in the investigation of ancient sites: acoustic archaeology. It brings to light a vanished aspect of the past with the aid of computer modelling and sophisticated equipment to calculate frequencies and resonances. These investigations have demonstrated that stone chambers, temples, dolmens, menhirs and even paleolithic caves were deliberately constructed or used in ways that would enhance the ritual sounds produced within them. In the process it reveals the very origins of music and a lost world where echoes were regarded as the voices of the spirits. It assists in our understanding of the biochemical and physiological reasons that lie behind the reasons why dance and rhythm and percussion are such powerful human experiences. Particularly interesting sections include the one on Infrasound (below the hearing ability of the human ear, but one can feel it), on brainwave states, the resonation of body parts, and music and mysticism. Locations tested and reported on, include Stonehenge and other spots on the British Isles, French and Spanish paleolithic caves, Grecian and Mayan temples. The text is enhanced by black & white illustrations, musical notations and beautiful color plates. There are also references & notes and an index. Being the first work ever in this exciting new discipline, this book is very valuable and I highly recommend it to readers who are interested in mankind's unknown past, and to musicologists, ethnologists and archaeologists.

Wow!
This is an essential reference. Noel Justice has done an amazing job of gathering the references and synthesizing a very complex and diverse array of "spear and arrow points" in this volume. I can also recommend "Stone Age Spear and Arrow Points of California and the Great Basin". Well worth the rather high price.

Stone and Steel: Paintings & Writings Celebrating the Bridges of New York City

The Drama of New York's Bridges in Paintings and Words
I was raised in New York, living there the first 21 years of my life. Being a New Yorker means having its numerous bridges engrained in your mind, in your images of the city. I am someone who loves bridges and own a number of books on the topic. This book includes strong and graceful and beautiful paintings of the bridges. They are often shown at night, looking up at dreamy clouds. During the day, they are part of the beauty of the city or its industry. Interestingly, most of the book consists of accompanying dramatic writings by native New Yorkers or visitors who have loved the city and its bridges. They include Alfred Kazin, John Dos Passos, Joyce Carol Oates, Hart Crane and Le Corbusier. And even Helen Keller! I bought the book in 1998 at the Museum of the City of New York and have an autographed copy from the artist. I thumb through it regularly since then in my home in St. Paul, Minnesota, 33 years since I left New York.

I really got into this book, Stone Babies, on the train today--almost missed my stop on the way home! It is quite a page turner after one gets going--a very ingenious plot. I love the role the computer plays, even if I don't understand all of the cyber-jargon.

P.S. great scenes of the South Bronx!

A beautiful, beautiful book
If you love beautiful homes you will love this book. It is full of homes with great bones and lovely details. One is more striking than the other. The photography is excellent, but what makes it different is that these are homes with a wonderful marriage of traditional lines and contemporary design. This is a book for people with a very refined taste in architecture.

Comprehensive guide and no nonsense approach to circles
In this book, Aubrey Burl gives the reader a general overview of megalithic stone monuments in the British Isles without all the supernatural or alien theories. His theories are firmly rooted in the earth, just like the stones.

The book includes a discussion of size, number of stones, avenues, sites and geographical relationships. It also includes a detailed appendix of all known circles and four-posters with landranger map coordinates, condition and survey details. An excellent guide to those who wish to explore and create their own theories.
